Port
The Male' Commercial Harbor, commissioned by President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, on 15 September 1986, is the main port of the Maldives. It has a 101 meter long alongside berth with a draft of 10.84 meters, capable of handling containerized cargo. Male' Commercial Harbor is equipped with barges, tugs, heavy duty moving equipment, open and warehouse storage facilities, container trailers and other standard facilities and equipment.
Airports
Male' International Airport
The first runway constructed on Hulhule' island in 1960, was made out of slotted steel sheets.
It was replaced in 1966 by an asphalt runway measuring 2840 meters in length and 45meters wide. As the nation developed and foreign trade and travel increased the need for a modern airport was felt. The Male International Airport was officially commissioned by President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom on 11th November 1981.
It has since been enlarged and upgraded. Today, international flights operate between Male' and many European and Asian countries.
Gan Regional Airport
Under a bilateral agreement, in 1956, the island of Gan, in Addu Atoll, was leased to the United Kingdom, as an air facility. The first runway built on the island was 2656 meters in length. When the British left and Gan reverted to the Maldives, the government took over and upgraded the Gan airport. The first commercial flight (Air Maldives Sky Van), touched down in Gan Airport on 1st June 1981. Gan airport has a maximum takeoff weight of 150,000 Kilo grams.
Kaadeddhoo Regional Airport
Commissioned on 10th December 1986, by His Excellency President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, the Kaadeddhoo domestic air port has a 762m x 30m runway. It can accommodate aircraft whose maximum weight does not exceed 5700kg.
Hanimaadhu Regional Airport
Hanimaadhoo airport was commissioned by His Excellency President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom on 28th October 1990. Situated at the extreme north of the archipelago, it has an overall length of 1,212 meters and is capable of handling planes of up to 30,000 kilo grams in weight or those with seating accommodation of 50 or less. Air Maldives Sky Van was the first flight to land at this airport.
