In 1955, a magneto telephone exchange was installed in Male' for use by government officials.
Public telephone service for Male', was for the first time introduced in the late Sixties, with a 300 line exchange. In the mid seventies, a 300 line automatic exchange was installed, and coin phones were introduced in Male'.
A 1500 line automatic exchange was installed in 1980, which was later upgraded to accommodate 3000 lines.
In 1987 a NEAX 61E type digital exchange of 10,000 line capacity was installed.
The AMPS Cellular mobile telephone system was launched in 1997, later replaced by the more advanced GSM Cellular Mobile Telephone System. Today, an array of sophisticated telephone services are available to the public, with telephone access to hundred percent of the country's population.
Internet was introduced to the Maldives in 1996. The Maldives internet services are provided by Dhiraagu, the country's telecommunication company. |
