Administration

CENTRAL

The structure of Executive Government is divided into the President's Office, Attorney General's Office and 17 Ministries and associated entities to implement the programmes of Government.

The Ministries of Government, the Attorney General's Office, the Administrative Office of the People's Majlis and the High Court, all function under the President's Office. In addition, the Department of Elections, Narcotics Control Board, National Council for Linguistic and Historical Research, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Anti-Corruption Board and Audit Office, function under the President's Office.

ATOLL

The twenty six natural atolls of the Maldives Archipelago are divided into 20 administrative regions, also known as atolls.

Each atoll is administered by an Atoll Chief (Atholhu Veriyaa). The president appoints atoll chiefs to each atoll, who administers it as may be decreed and directed by the president. The Ministry of Atoll Administration and its Northern and Southern Regional Offices, Atoll Offices and Island Offices are collectively responsible to the President for Atolls Administration.

ISLANDS

The administrative head of the island is the Island Chief (Katheeb), appointed by the Ministry of Atolls Administration. The Island Chief's immediate superior is the Atoll Chief.
