Sultanate
The Republic of Maldives or Dhivehi Rajje', (the land of the Dhivehi people) is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean. Its closest neighbors are India and Sri Lanka. The Laccadives lie to the North and the Chagos Group to the South.  
 
Republic

The President is the head of state, government and commander in chief of the armed forces. He is elected for a renewable term of five years, by a national referendum.

 
 
Administration

The structure of Executive Government is divided into the President's Office, Attorney General's Office and 17 Ministries and associated entities to implement the programmes of Government.

 
 
Constitution

The first written constitution of the Maldives was proclaimed on 22 December 1932, in the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen Iskandhar III.

 
 
Foreign Relations

The Maldives follows a strictly nonaligned foreign policy, independent of the great powers, while maintaining friendly relations with the world community.
